Your own tooth is valuable, so we first try to preserve it. For most damage there is a treatment today that costs little healthy tooth substance. Which route suits you depends on how far the damage has progressed.
When decay is still at an early stage
Early decay often shows as a light patch in the enamel. In some cases it can be treated before any drilling is needed. With caries infiltration we bring a thin flowing resin into the affected area, which seals it from the inside. We work with the ICON method for this. Whether your tooth comes into question for it is something we see at the examination.
Fillings and inlay fillings
If the damage is larger, we remove the decayed area and close the tooth with a tooth coloured filling. It is matched to your tooth in shape and in colour. On request we numb the area locally, so that the treatment involves minimal discomfort.
With larger defects a filling sometimes no longer holds. We then make inlay fillings, known as inlays and onlays. They are produced in the laboratory from an impression or a digital scan of your tooth. There the shape can be worked out more precisely than directly in the mouth. In this way the margin closes tightly and the inlay filling supports the weakened tooth.
When the nerve is inflamed
If bacteria reach as far as the tooth nerve, the tissue inside the tooth becomes inflamed. A root canal treatment often helps then, and the tooth does not have to be taken out. We numb it locally, clean the fine canals in the root and then seal them tightly. Many patients find the treatment calmer than they had expected. If you are worried about it, please tell us beforehand.
Why prevention is part of it
The earlier we find damage, the smaller the treatment turns out to be. Regular check ups and professional dental cleaning are therefore part of preserving your teeth. At home, thorough brushing and daily cleaning of the spaces between your teeth help.
