Gums that bleed when you brush are a warning sign and not a small matter. Inflammation can be treated well if it is recognised early. We take a close look at your gums and discuss the fitting steps with you.
The difference between gingivitis and periodontitis
With gingivitis, that is an inflammation of the gums, only the soft tissue is affected. The gums are reddened, slightly swollen and bleed easily. This form usually settles again once the plaque has been thoroughly removed.
If the inflammation lasts longer, it can spread to the tooth supporting structures. We then speak of periodontitis. The bone that holds the tooth in the jaw is broken down as well. Bone does not grow back on its own, so early treatment is sensible.
How the treatment proceeds
First we measure the depth of the gum pockets, that is the gaps between tooth and gum. We then clean these pockets thoroughly and loosen the deposits from the root surfaces. The area is numbed locally, so that the treatment involves minimal discomfort.
After a few weeks we look at how the tissue has responded. The gums are often noticeably calmer by then. In some cases further steps are needed, for example a small procedure at deep pockets or a medicated carrier that we place into the pocket.
Why the follow up care is decisive
The bacteria settle again bit by bit after the treatment. That is why we see you again at fixed intervals, check the pockets and clean your teeth professionally. How often this is advisable depends on your findings. This follow up care may help the result to last.
What gums and the body have to do with each other
An inflammation in the mouth occupies the rest of the body as well. With diabetes, that is a disorder of the sugar metabolism, the two conditions often influence each other. If you have diabetes, please do let us know. We then match the treatment and the intervals to it.
Smoking is also regarded as a risk factor for the gums. It narrows the fine blood vessels, so the gums bleed less and the inflammation is noticed later. Healing then often needs a little more time.
Please do come and see us
If your gums bleed or are sensitive, we will look at them calmly. You will then learn what your findings are and what would be sensible next. Call us or book an appointment online.
