Even with careful cleaning at home, plaque is left behind in some areas of the mouth. Professional dental cleaning reaches exactly those areas. It adds to your daily care, it does not replace it.

Why brushing alone cannot reach everywhere

A toothbrush cleans well what it reaches. In the spaces between your teeth, along the edge of the gums and in the grooves of the back teeth it often does not get there. Soft plaque stays behind in those places. When this plaque takes up minerals from your saliva, it hardens. This is how tartar forms, which you can no longer remove at home.

What happens at the appointment

First we take a calm look at your teeth and your gums. We then loosen the hard deposits with fine instruments and with ultrasound, that is with gentle vibrations. Soft plaque and discolouration are removed afterwards with a powder jet. Many patients find this puts little strain on them. If individual areas are sensitive, please tell us, we can numb them locally.

We then polish all surfaces smooth, because new plaque sticks less easily to smooth surfaces. Finally we apply a fluoride varnish. It makes the enamel, that is the hard outer layer of the tooth, more resistant to acids.

How often a cleaning is advisable

For many adults, one or two appointments a year are suitable. People who tend to have gum inflammation or who smoke often come at shorter intervals. Which interval is right for you is something we discuss with you after the examination.

What you will notice afterwards

The teeth feel smooth and often look a little brighter, because discolouration has gone. Individual teeth may be sensitive to cold for a short time. This usually eases after a few days. For the first few hours, please avoid coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco as far as you can.
